WARE COUNTY JROTC  - DOMINATES REGION DRILL CHAMPIONSHIPS

This past Saturday; March 6, 2004, Bradwell Institute, Hinesville, GA., the Corp of Cadets from Ware County High School reigned supreme.  Although this is a "down year" in terms of the number of cadets participating in the drill Team, nothing was down about the quality of the "Golden Gator Drill Team" as they qualified for State in every event entered.

The Golden Gator Scoreboard: First Place (6 events), Second Place (3 Events), Third Place (3 events).  This is the highest number of entries qualifying from any school in our 12 school region

STATE CHAMPIONS
JROTC DRILL TEAM

     For the fifth time in the last five years the Ware County JROTC Drill Team has won, or shared, the overall First Place Female Team Championship and Commander’s Cup.  Ware County has won outright the recent past three championships; served as co-championship in 2001, and won outright in 2000. 

     This past Saturday in Macon, Ware County won first place in Female Standard Platoon Drill with Cadet First Sergeant Porche Hamilton serving as Commander; team members are:  Joy Dent, Zakeya Champ, Charity Felton, Octavia Owens, Keisha Lockey, Trymecia Bellamy, Tarani Raulerson, Neikeisha Carr, Saponda Lee, Sache’ Verner, Kim Edwards and Jericka Bolen.

     In Female Platoon Exhibition, Cadet Captain Jewel Curry commanded a strong team to second overall.  Team members are:  Nicole McGauley, Felicia Corbitt, Sheniera Clark, Charity Felton, Joy Dent, Erica Johnson, Tarani Raulerson, Zakeya Champ, Michelle Duncan, Tanisha Martin, Kim Edwards and Saponda Lee. 

The combined scores of the two platoon teams were good enough to win the overall state championship by 105 points. 

     Individual State Champion in Female Exhibition was Jewell Curry.  Cadet Captain Curry outscored 20 competitors from powerhouses such as Griffin, North Atlanta, Evans, Richmond Academy, Crisp County and Bradwell Institute.

     The cadets from Ware County managed one additional trophy at state, again in the Female bracket.  The Female Squad Exhibition Team commanded by Jewell Curry finished forth behind Central of Macon, Southside (Atlanta) and Carver who took the Overall Team Championship.  Team members are:  Sheniera Clark, Felicia Crobitt, Nicole McGauley, Michelle Duncan, Erica Johnson and Tanisha Martin.

     Crisp County which only had two first place trophies in ten events finished with eight overall trophies followed by Ware County with three first place trophies and five overall awards.  No other team in the Championships had more than three first place trophies.

     Other members of the Ware County JROTC Drill Team are:  Charles Curry, Jacobe Tarver and John Williams.  “We had a good run at state.  I really felt we were much better in areas we failed to place in this competition” stated COL Wade, Senior Army Instructor at the high school.  “I hope this acts as an energizer as we prepare for the All Services National Drill Team Championships the last weekend in April.  We have a really good bunch of cadets that have a great deal of talent.  The teams we compete against in Daytona are the best in the Nation.  It would really feel good to bring home our first National Championship trophy to Ware County.”
